What Makes a Portrait Beautiful? San Diego Lifestyle Photography

What makes a portrait beautiful? I have asked myself this question many times. I have asked others the same question.

Each person has a different answer. With that, I concluded there is no one way to photograph a portrait that is not beautiful.

To some people, a portrait is:

  • mysterious

  • integrating

  • pleasing to look at.

  • sexy

  • nude

  • female

  • wealthy

To others, it's completely different. Not all people like to look at the same photograph and think it's beautiful. I concluded there is not one portrait that defines beauty for all people.

Beautiful isn't the way a person looks. Each person defines for themselves what beautiful is. We assume beautiful looks a certain way and that all people see it the same way. They don't.

There are people who think:

  • fat

  • male | female

  • with un-perfect features

  • tall | short

  • freckles | un-freckled

  • short | tall

Then I asked myself is it in the editing of the photograph that makes people look beautiful in a portrait? I discovered that each photographer edits differently.

  • bright light

  • low light

  • highlights

  • natural light

  • studio light

  • street light

  • hues

  • plant light

  • v-light

  • backlight

  • gas-light

I'm sure there is something else I missed.

I was delighted to see clothing designers take responsibility for their line and realize people are of many sizes and their body size isn't what makes them beautiful. There are still many things to discover. Beautiful is defined by the person whose photograph is being taken. That's what I conclude.

As a San Diego Lifestyle photographer. I can take hundreds of photographs of a person and they will think they are all just average. Then I can take another person's photographs in the same pose and they think they are all beautiful. Each person defines within themselves what they consider beautiful. It is not defined by the photographer as much as we'd like to think. Sometimes it's a self-esteem issue. Sometimes, it's just the photographer and the person being photographed do not agree on the definition of beautiful. it is about the image the business wants to portray their product.

San Diego Lifestyle Photography for Maria Kamon Photography is more about talking with the customer or client and discussing what, how, when, why, and where they want their portrait portrayed. It's about portraying the lifestyle you want. Not so much about my photography is going to make you look a certain way. That's why I consider myself a hobbyist photographer. I am not after seeking fame for my business, but rather creating a look my clients | customers want. If they think their portrait is beautiful Then I consider that a business win for myself.
